Unit 1 of Filipino 2 consists of lessons which include Literature during the Ancient Period, Literature during the Spanish period and Literature during the Japanese period.
Various literary pieces were developed during the different periods. long before the cpming of the Spaniards in the Philippines, tehere were already arts and literature among the ancient Filipinos. most of their litarary works were those handed down through the words of mouth like sayings, slogans, riddles, epics and folk songs in poetic forms; those folklores, legends and myths in prose forms and dances and rituals were the first forms of a play in the country. despite the oppression and aim of colonizing the Filipinos by the Spaniards, the great influence of Spaniards in developing and recording our literature cannot be denied.
religion and other institutions representing the European civilization enriched the language of those in the low lands, introduced plays like comedy, sarzuela, senakulo and drama. although it was already late when Spain brought here in the country the idea of liberty and freedom, it was still successful in convincing a few Filipino intellectuals and writers in order to understand the true meaning of this. During the Japanese times, new writers were given the chance to circulate in literature, they produced many pieces written in Filipino compare to those in English and there pieces representing real life situations.
